Counter Cholesterol

The National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention is piloting a public awareness campaign that encourages a high impact target audience to manage their cholesterol risk. The Austin-based pilot will develop messaging and communications tools organizations can use to embolden our target audience throughout the U.S. to manage their and their families’ cholesterol.

Target audience

Primary audience
Mothers aged 35-55 years of age

Secondary audience
Their families (i.e. spouses, partners, parents)

Beginning with those at highest risk for high cholesterol

  • Area with higher than average prevalence of FH, elevated LDL-C, and CVD-related mortality rates
  • Those who have ASCVD
  • Those with a genetic predisposition for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)
  • Those at risk for heart disease, e.g. has diabetes, live unhealthy lifestyle

The National Forum created the pilot to respond to the growing number of Americans who have or are at risk for high cholesterol. High cholesterol is one of the top controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Yet, today, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will have high cholesterol at some point in their life.

The National Forum has partnered with various local and national stakeholders to carry out the cholesterol risk pilot, including the Travis County Health and Human Services. The pilot launched July 2016. It is made possible through funding from Sanofi and Regeneron.
