8th National Forum Report Coming Soon!  Slides and Session Information can be found in Agenda.

The 8th National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention was held at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on April 26-27, 2010. The theme was “Creating the Will for A Heart Healthy and Stroke Free Society." The 2010 agenda includes nationally renowned keynote speakers, interactive panel discussions, implementation group meetings and special networking opportunities.

Creating the Will for A Heart Healthy and Stroke Free Society: The capacity to reduce the burden of heart disease and stroke in the United States requires a stable health infrastructure and the will to maximize it at a national, state, and local level.  Societal will is created by an awareness of the disease burden and scientific evidence of the efficacy of interventions, harnessed by champions of change to create programs which impact people where they live, work, study, and play.  As the debate for national reform of healthcare and its funding continues, state and local health stakeholders will continue to create population-level interventions that meet the needs of their communities. Successful state and local programs illustrate the continued leadership and opportunity to address a major cause of death, disability, and healthcare costs in our communities throughout the United States.  Without such leadership, neither an infrastructure nor the will to use it will be possible, and without this capacity, the cardiovascular epidemic will continue unabated.

National Forum Mission:

To provide leadership and encourage collaboration among organizations at local, state, national, and global levels committed to heart disease and stroke prevention.

8th National Forum Goals:

1)  Increase collaboration for heart disease and stroke prevention.

2)  Promote innovations in science translation, policy and action.

3)  Identify key opportunities to drive tangible progress towards achieving the recommendations in A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke (as updated).

4)  In the context of current political, social and economic environments, enhance awareness and build a sense of urgency for heart disease and stroke prevention and management.

8th National Forum Objectives:

1)  Identify at least two major political, social or economic issues and their implications that significantly impact progress towards achieving the recommendations within A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke.

2)  Describe at least two major heart disease and stroke prevention opportunities facing the nation over the next five years.

3)  Demonstrate organizational support for advancing one or more of the 7th National Forum's Calls to Action.

About the National Forum:

The National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention was established in 2003 and charged with implementing A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke. National Forum membership includes representatives from over 80 national and international organizations representing public and private healthcare organizations, faith, advocacy, academia and policy. Each year the National Forum assembles the world’s leading experts to discuss developments in heart disease and stroke prevention and gain valuable information in community intervention, communication, and research strategies.

The National Forum utilizes seven implementation groups to accomplish its mission and vision:

  • Action Priorities: identifies effective policies in cardiovascular health promotion.
  • Communications: communicates the urgency and importance of preventing heart disease and stroke.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: monitors the burden of heart disease and stroke and measures progress in prevention and treatment.
  • Organizational Capacity: builds the capacity of federal, state, and local public health agencies to address heart disease and stroke
  • Policy Research: develops a comprehensive research agenda and fosters translation of research into practice.
  • Public Health Leadership: fosters the necessary leadership and partnerships for a comprehensive public health strategy to prevent heart disease and stroke.
  • Global and Regional Partnerships: engages regional and global partners to mobilize resources in heart disease and stroke prevention and treatment.
